How I became a designer & My career as a designer
Hey, My name is Olivia. I am a UX/UI designer based in Sydney.

I am curious. I always want to know what makes people tick.
I am passionate. I have a passion for creating things that make a difference for users.
I have empathy. I can feel it deep in my heart how others feel.
I started my career as a telecommunications engineer with China Telecom, where I performed network optimization duties and solved lots of clients’ network problems. In that role, a major accomplishment I’m most proud of was that I developed a network planning and optimization software user interface in C++ as a member of the main frame group.
During my first work, I found that I like communicating with people, finding reasons behind their behavior, and solving their problems. So, I came back to the university to learn more about user experience. I completed my Ph.D. degree in 2013. The topic of my doctoral thesis specialised in optimising the SAAS user experience.
Then I worked as a senior telecommunications manager with PetroChina. In that role, I led a team of 26 engineers operating CNPC's national telecommunications network. I analyzed network data and presented network operation reports to stakeholders monthly and yearly. In the meantime, I managed related system and software development projects from end to end, which helped me build a deep understanding of the agile process.
To enrich my life experience, I migrated to Sydney in 2018, then I worked as a product designer with the 3rd Solution Investment company. In that role, I played a pivotal role in the development of the company's online sales platform, crafting an intuitive and seamless user experience. Additionally, I designed and implemented a customer management system that significantly improved the efficiency of tracking customer data and interactions. I worked with a cross-functional team, I gathered user requirements, drafted the website layout, did usability testing, completed the acceptance test, drafted the user manual, and launched the company's online sales website which led to an increase in product sales by 60%.

Then I joined Upflowy. Upflowy is a startup and I created the whole user experience of the product as a solo designer. I designed both the desktop version and the mobile version. I also built the design system for the company. The product launched in September 2021, and it was the 1# product of the week on Product Hunt.

Then I joined Airtasker as a product designer in November 2021. I supported multiple teams such as the Oneflare team, SEO team, Marketing team, and CRM team, etc. I completed 15 big or small projects about landing page design, user journey optimization, user experience improvement, and customer engagement. Thanks to those different projects, I had the opportunity to learn a lot of things and cooperate with different teams and PMs. I broadened my horizons to see and solve different problems. I can feel that I am growing every day and have gained a lot of confidence and experience for future projects.
Through these experiences, I found that being a UX/UI designer is something I really want to do, something I love so much. The story, the message, the feeling, the connection and how do I make this reach to people. All of these things fascinate me. I can use my creativity to solve problems one by one, which makes me feel happy and fulfilled.
